Getting high can be a fun way to relax and it can have some great health benefits, but it does need to be done with care. Sharing a joint with friends or taking a few hits from a bong might be the perfect way to wind down after a stressful week, but getting too high can take the fun out of the experience.
Fortunately, itâs easier than ever to control your high. With an increasing range of accessories on the market, itâs easy to manage your high and prevent any unpleasant side effects from occurring. In addition to this, the legalization of cannabis for recreational and/or medicinal purposes in many states means you can now obtain your marijuana from reputable and reliable sources.
How high is too high?
The whole point of marijuana is to get high, right? Not exactly. Whilst many users enjoy smoking or using weed for its THC content, this isnât the only reason people use it. The rise in CBD, or cannabinoids, has opened up a whole new world for people who want the benefits associated with marijuana, but without the high that smoking a joint can bring.
Often associated with medical-use marijuana, cannabinoids are being used to treat many medical conditions, and itâs likely theyâll be used even more in the future. As CBD products can be obtained without THC, you can access the benefits associated with them without the risk of getting high. So, if you donât want to get high at all, try CBD products with zero THC content.
Modern research is showing that THC can supplement the positive effects of CBD - they work together! Whilst getting high can have many benefits, getting too high could give you a bad experience. If you use too much weed, itâs likely youâll feel unwell for a while. Sometimes known as âgreening outâ, you may feel nauseous, lightheaded and dizzy. Some users also report feelings of anxiety or paranoia when theyâve consumed too much, and this can be a bit if a scary experience.
However, these unpleasant side effects donât usually last too long and they arenât typically associated with any long-term problems. Whilst you may have a dry mouth and an epic case of the munchies, this is easily resolved by keeping a cool, non-alcoholic drink to hand, along with a range of snacks to keep you going.
Know your limits
Knowing how much cannabis you can tolerate is a good way to prevent any unpleasant side-effects from occurring, although this can come with experience. Perhaps the most effective way to minimize the risk of side-effects is to choose a consumption method which allows for greater control.
If you consume edibles, for example, you may be unsure exactly how much weed is in them. Even if you prepare them yourself, it can be impossible to determine how much weed has made it into each edible, so you could get higher than you expect from minimal consumption. Whilst some people prefer edibles to smoking because it negates any impact on your lungs (something we're working to address), it does make edibles more difficult to judge how much youâre actually consuming. This could increase the risk of getting too high and experiencing unwanted side-effects.
Similarly, if youâre trying a new method of consuming pot, make sure you take it easy. Whilst you may tolerate a couple of joints pretty well, switching to concentrates is a whole other ball game. Theyâre far more potent than smoking a joint, so youâre going to get high far more quickly. Whenever you try something new, be sure to pace yourself and give it time for the effects to kick-in before you continue.
Filter your joint

Following the legalization of marijuana in many states, there are a whole host of new users who are trying pipes and joints for the very first time. Understandably, this can be a little daunting, but using appropriate filters can help to negate any unwanted effects and help you to monitor your usage more accurately.
With a variety of sizes and styles available, the WeedgetSMART Filter Adapter can be used with almost any inhalation devices on the market, and itâs perfect for use with joints and pre-rolled cones too. Beware of the secondhand high!
Although you may not actively be smoking, sitting around while your friends get high is probably going to have an effect on you too. If you know your limits and you successfully stop after a few hits, you may be wondering why youâre still reeling from an epic high. Many consumption methods involve sharing devices, smoke, and vapors. Depending on the device, these arenât always well-contained, so while your friends are using them, youâre going to get a secondhand high too.
Whilst you may look at it as a cheap way to benefit from your friendsâ usage, it can increase your high without you realizing it. When youâre smoking in a group and youâve had enough, head outside to get some air and minimize the impact of that secondhand high.
Find a way to relax
Anecdotal evidence suggests that taking a cool shower can help you to calm down if your high gets a bit too much to handle. Whilst itâs not really known why or how a cold shower helps to bring you back down to earth, many users claim that a cool shower has calming and restorative powers after a hit goes awry.
Similarly, smelling black pepper could be just the thing to decrease your anxiety if youâre suffering from post-high paranoia. Found in black pepper, beta-caryophyllene is a terpene which is known to help reduce weed-induced anxiety and paranoia. Many users recommend crushing it and smelling it to help improve your symptoms after youâve got a little too high. If youâre feeling brave, some people even recommend chewing on a few black peppercorns, but this may be a little intense.
Limonene is another terpene which can minimize the effects of THC, so it will help to bring you down from that high a little quicker. If you get too high, a slosh of lemon juice may help ease your symptoms of anxiety, and mixing it with a bit of lemon zest could help it to work more quickly.
If the thought of smelling black pepper or swilling lemon juice is enough to freak you out, you may want to practice the distraction method of dealing with a high thatâs just a bit too high. Whilst some people find that relaxing can help them to overcome the unpleasant feelings associated with too much weed, for many people this simply fuels their anxiety.
Instead, keeping your mind busy can be the key to riding out weed-induced anxiety. Whatever activities you can think of to keep your mind active can help to distract you from the paranoia until it dissipates. Organize your music collection, tidy your living room or watch a film to take your mind off of your symptoms, and youâll be feeling better before you know it.
Of course, going to sleep can be one of the best ways to minimize any discomfort youâre experiencing. If you feel relaxed enough to get some rest, the effects of the weed should dissipate naturally, and youâll avoid any unpleasant sensations which are associated with getting too high. Whilst you may struggle to relax at first if youâre feeling anxious, taking some calming breaths, listing to relaxing music and dimming the lights can help you to feel sleepy.
Avoid getting too high
Fortunately, there are no known fatalities associated with cannabis use, so even if you get too high, there shouldnât be anything to worry about. When youâve smoked too much or consumed too many edibles, it can make you feel anxious and panicky, but itâs important to try and relax. In the vast majority of cases, these sensations will only last a few minutes or hours. Of course, if any symptoms are concerning you or youâre not sure what youâve consumed, itâs always best to get medical help.
However, smoking a little too much and feeling extra anxious or dizzy isnât all that uncommon. In fact, itâs happened to most smokers at least once. To ensure you only get as high as you want to in the future, make sure you monitor your consumption, take a break when you need to and use the best accessories to help you enhance your high, and keep it manageable.
